Today I took my first class this semester in digital marketing – where it’s mandatory to write a blog. So here I am, writing. I couldn’t decide if I’d would write in my native language which is Swedish, or if I’d try my best in Norwegian or if I should just go all in and do it in English.
I’ve decided to go all in and do it in English. Since I haven’t been writing in pure Swedish in almost 10 years, and Swedish and Norwegian is so similar that sometimes it’s hard to separate what word belongs to what language. After 6 years in Norway, my Norwegian is getting pretty good, but it can still be a bit tricky at times. I’m not a professional in English writing, but I’ll try my best so please bear with me.
A few of the things we talked about (or all of them) today in class made me feel overwhelmed of what the future will bring us. It’s so cool to think about how things are developing so fast, but at the same time it’s very scary.
We talked about algorithms, face recognition, deep fake videos and how in China they score you by the things you do in your everyday life based on likes on Facebook. How crazy is this? It’s insane if you ask me.
Or the fact that your faith can lay in the “hands” of a robot, is a robot more trustworthy with it’s techology than a doctor with years of training? Some will agree and some will not. Who will have the best knowledge to decide if you’d be in the position of having your life hanging by a thin thread with help from a respirator, to make the call on your life. Keep it plugged in, or pull the plug out? The Robot or the doctor? This is the future. And it’s coming.
I lived in Boston, USA for two years and everybody who’s been to USA knows that the security to get in to the country is making a lot of people uncomfortable, myself included. You’ll have to leave fingerprints, take a picture, give out a whole lot of information on how long you’re planning to stay, how much money you have with you, living arrangements and so on. Let’s take the picture for example, with that picture taken – it will be storaged for years in a database who can locate you wherever you go and when. This is slightly uncomfortable.
BUT, the impressive part with face recognition and algorithm is in another example on what happened in China. During a prison break, the prisoner tried to hide in a crowd with 50 000 people at a concert. Since they have a massive amount of surveillance in China, they were able to locate this man – with help from a picture and the algorithm. Now, seriously. HOW cool is that!?
