WHAT IS FACIAL RECOGNITION ? HOW DOES IT WORK ?
Facial recognition is an AI-based technology that recognizes human faces. To make successful and accurate face recognition, this technology considers a number of aspects: jawline length, the shape of the cheekbones, eye sockets depth, etc. All these charateristics help the technology “remember” and ‘’recognize’’ who is the owner of the face.

A facial recognition system uses biometrics to map facial features from a photograph or video. It compares the information with a database of known faces to find a match. Facial recognition can help verify personal identity, but it also raises privacy issues.
Here are three applications for facial recognition software, along with a simple explanation of how it does it:
Basic facial recognition: For filters like Animoji or Instagram, the front camera finds basic facial features: eyes, nose, and mouth. It then uses algorithms to detect, determine facial expressions and apply image filters later.
3D Recognition: In plain words, when you set up Face ID (or similar programs) on your phone, it will take a photo and measure the distance between your facial features. Then, each time you unlock the phone, the front camera works to measure and confirm your identity.
Identification to identify: When an organization wants to use facial recognition for security, advertising, or control purposes, they use an algorithm to match the real face against a database of molds. face collected earlier. The process is nearly identical to Apple’s Face ID but on a larger scale. Theoretically, any database could be used (identity cards, Facebook profiles), but in practice, data that is usually sharp images would be required to capture in advance for ease of use and manage.

WILL FACIAL RECOGNITION BE A THREAT TO OUR SOCIAL LIFE ?
Robots, war machines are the most popular topic for Sci-Fi (Science fiction) films. Following it are future technologies and the most typical is facial recognition. With face recognition, human can get access to gates, building, system. Nowaday, facial recognition technology is used for security field such as we can unlock our phones by scanning our faces,, account log in secure, identification and for entertainment such as picture and video filter on Instagram, Snapchat, etc. By using facial recognition, the more user, the more face will be collected and stored in the database.
There are benefits and drawbacks of facial recognition, in my point of view:
Benefits:
-For entertainment (Instagram, snapchat)
-For higher security
Drawbacks:
-Fake news
-Financial fraud
-Pornographic videos
-Terrorist
Back to the third lecture with Arne Krokan, we were illustrated an interesting and creepy example which was the video of the formal president of USA, Barrack Obama, was talking on the left screen while Jordan Peele was talking on the right screen, the special point is it was not a real person of Jordan Peele, it is the facial replication of him with the mouth-shaped mouth of Obama. In my last ”Artificial Intelligence (AI), a double- edge sword in the digital economy”, I pointed out the threat that AI can allow individual create fake videos my using anothers face. These things remind me about a character in Game of Throne : the faceless man. He kills and uses dead people’s face to fake them and act their role.

I am meantioning these thing because I think the worst thing can happen with facial recognition is identity theft. A person can stole others identity to do him/her purpose. These can be used without an individual’s permission to spread fake news, create porn in a person’s likeness who actually isn’t acting in it, and more to not only damage an individual’s reputation but livelihood. The technology is getting so good the possibility for people to be duped by it is high.
Now introducing Deepfakes, the digital assassin:
According to Wikipedia: ‘’Deepfakes (a portmanteau of “deep learning” and “fake”)are synthetic mediain which a person in an existing image or video is replaced with someone else’s likeness. While the act of faking content is not new, deepfakes leverage powerful techniques from machine learning and artificial intelligence to manipulate or generate visual and audio content with a high potential to deceive. The main machine learning methods used to create deepfakes are based on deep learning and involve training generative neural network architectures, such as autoencoders or generative adversarial networks (GANs).
Deepfakes have garnered widespread attention for their uses in celebrity pornographic videos, revenge porn, fake news, hoaxes, and financial fraud. This has elicited responses from both industry and government to detect and limit their use.’’

AND THE ANSWER IS…
Yes, facial recognition can be a threat to our social life. A social include all the fake news, a social without identity, a social without trust between human and human, people live and doubt each other. How can we build a good and strong society if we lose the trust between us. And the privacy information will be stolen if the software/system be hacked. First, many people will lose their assets such as money from bank app, their accounts and in the end, they will lose their identity, which I think is the most valuable and the most important asset of a person. Their face will be used for bad purpose such as publishing fake news, being add to a pornography videos, the consequences is that person’s life will soon turn into a mess and chaos.
