We have come a long way in this section, most of us have learned that it’s green growth and towards being environmentally friendly. On my own perspective, I noticed that most of the companies, most of them are manufacturing enterprises, during their production process, give off a lot of different types of emissions, thus their marketing and branding campaigns are mostly about environmental protection. In this blog post, I will present Nespresso’s idea of their environmental plan.

Recycling Coffee Capsules & Pods.

“Responsibility means recyclability”

Coffee capsules and pods are made of a combination of materials from plastic and aluminium that impact the environment directly when they are used off and threw out the environment. As a manufacturer, Nespresso of course produce a large amount of coffee capsules and pods every years, and not only Nespresso, there are many brand in the market out there also produce coffee capsules and pods to serve customer who use the machines.

Coffee capsules are made from aluminium.

Imagine if these capsules and pods after be used and threw out the environment, what will happen ? We have been talking about the amount of plastic waste, now we have these pods and capsules from serving people who want to sastify their coffee habit and need.

A person that know coffee capsules and pods will harm our environment, they will probably not buy and use these products. Nespresso read their mind, they know not only how to raise sales but also protect the environment. They run “The Positive Cup” program, it means each cup of coffee will positively impact customer and environment.

Reduce the amount of aluminium waste by recycling used capsules and pods

They had expand their recycling initiatives to ensure that 100% of their Club Member have chance to reach one of those, thus increasing recycling rates. The most effective way which is of course, recycle the used pods and capsules. Nespresso will take these old coffee pods and capsules collected and make it into the new one. The important factor that helps this method is their aluminium used to product pods and capsules is 100% virgin aluminium which in compliance with the first standard for responsible aluminium created by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative.

86% of Nespresso’s Club Member had access to a recycling solution in 2015, and had the support of 14,000 dedicated capsule collection points operational around the world. By now these number increasing to 122,287 collection points and 90% of clients have a recycling solution nearby.

Huge amount of used capsules are collected and ready to be recycled.

Nespresso had tried and worked so hard to ensure that 100% of Club Member in any country where they do business have access to a recycling solution and they also in process to increase overall recycling.

How can they do this ?

”End-to-end” loop is what Nespresso are creating. They factor that makes this success is innovation, thus helping Nespresso to build the collection system as most efficient and most convenient as possible.

Nespresso also take collaboration into account. They keep working with their local partners to bring innovative solutions. Defining the first standard for responsible aluminium is also a key role that Nespresso are playing.

Reduce the climate change effect by “100% Carbon efficient operations” plan.

As I have mentioned above, each manufacturing company will always release their waste into environment. The most typical waste is carbon. Carbon footprint, the total amount of carbon are released out the environment by a company in production. Carbon can cause many harmful effect, one of those is greenhouse gases. As a manufacturing company, Nespresso understand the issue and has their plan for it.

In this field, Nespresso has a vision that is reduce 10% amount carbon footprint of the company. They seek to increase the resilience of coffee farms from climate change and through an extensive agroforestry program in the AAA regions, they will help to reverse the degradation of natural ecosystems.

They set a goal for 100% carbon efficient in their operations, to make it success, their residual operational carbon will be compensated through the same agroforestry program. Planting trees to bring the benefit of carbon sequestration is a part of this mechanism, by this, it also create value for farmers and Nespresso partners. Moreover, planting trees not only bring the benefit of carbon sequestration, but also contribute to increase coffee farms’s climate resilience

Carbon footprint of each cup of Nespresso was reduced by 20% between 2009 and 2013. By introducing energy-efficient machines and piloting the Rainforest Alliance climate module at farm level, they made it possible.
